This week’s reading looks at the applications for CNC, mostly in architecture, construction, and furniture design. The work so far seems kind of disappointing - more curvy, amorphous, minimal shapes. What I want to see is the creation of more intricate and decorative work, putting the machines to use executing things with some real craftsmanship. The L.A. Times article Shape of Things to Come talks about the potential for “delicate filigrees and Rococo curlicues”, but there aren’t a lot of designers taking advantage of the capabilities.
